About us

FID Media is the central portal for scholarly information and open access publishing in communication and media studies and related disciplines. As a specialised information service, it supports researchers, educators, students, and practitioners, as well as anyone with an interest in communication, film, television, and media. Through its range of services, FID Media promotes open science in communication and media studies, supporting the publication of both scholarly outputs and research data.

FID Media Search

FID Media Search is the catalogue of FID Media and provides a specialised search engine tailored to the needs of communication and media studies. It offers users free and straightforward access to scholarly literature and specialised information resources. FID Media Search includes more than 5 million records from over 40 subject-specific data sources.

Through FID Media Search, all users who are professionally engaged in academic research also gain access to specialised FID licences. These include major national and international newspapers as well as a continuously growing collection of e-books licensed specifically for FID Media users.

FID Media Publish

FID Media Publish brings together all services related to the open access publication of scholarly outputs. These include the disciplinary repository as well as a range of advisory services. Guidance is available on research data management and copyright issues, among other topics. The repository supports both primary publications and secondary publications in communication and media studies and related disciplines. For secondary publications in particular, FID Media offers a dedicated service providing rights assessment and publication support. In addition, FID Media provides a pledging service to support the consortial funding of open access packages relevant to the discipline. Selected subject-specific collections are also digitised and made available to the research community.

FID Media Community

Within FID Media Community, users can find announcements of upcoming events and calls for papers in communication and media studies. Organisers can easily submit information about their own events to FID Media. All announcements are archived, gradually creating a comprehensive record of events in communication and media studies. Over time, this archive serves as a form of disciplinary memory, documenting the scholarly culture and development of the field.

Participating Institutions

FID Media is a service provided jointly by the Leipzig University Library, the Marburg University Library, and the Department of Media Studies at Philipps University Marburg. The three institutions jointly support and fund FID Media, together with third-party funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) through its ‘Fachinformationsdienste für die Wissenschaft’ [Discipline-Specific Information Services] funding programme.

Development of FID Media

Since 2014, Leipzig University Library has operated the FID Media’s discovery portal under the name adlr.link. In September 2024, FID Media was established through the integration of adlr.link and the open access publishing services of media/rep/, the disciplinary repository for media studies.

FID-Netzwerk

FID Media is one of around 40 specialised information services in Germany. Together, they provide discipline-specific resources and services tailored to the needs of their respective research communities, regardless of location and free of charge. Further information about the FID network is available at fid.network/
